Platen sealing

Sealing a blister web and lid between flat sealing plates.

Also called: flat sealing; flat-plate sealing; flatbed sealing.

What does platen sealing describe on a blister machine?

Flat plates bring the forming web and lid together under the sealing tools. This identifies the sealing operation, not the upstream method used to make the pockets.

An intermittent-motion platen line can be configured for thermoformable materials or aluminium-based forming laminates. Flat sealing therefore does not by itself mean a PVC-only or coldform-only line. Confirm the material and format specification for the actual configuration.

Contact time, pressure and package results

Heat sealing involves temperature, pressure and contact time. A label such as flat sealing does not supply these process conditions or demonstrate their effect on the selected material pairing. Ask how the proposed line defines sealing dwell and which conditions apply to the offered format and lid/base grades.

Compare sealing conditions and package results for the offered material and format. Distinguish the full production cycle from the period when the sealing tools contact the web.
