False accept

An inspection decision that accepts a unit which actually has the defect being checked.

Also called: missed defect; false negative; defect escape decision.

Why is a false accept a false negative?

On these inspection pages, “positive” means the target defect is present. A false accept occurs when a reference-defective unit receives an acceptable decision. Because the defect was not flagged, it is a false negative. Negative does not mean the bottle is physically missing.

Always check the label convention. If a report defines positive as good product, the positive/negative names change. The underlying comparison between reference condition and inspection decision remains the same.

Is every defective bottle leaving the line a false accept?

No. A bottle can be correctly identified as defective and still escape physical removal. Investigate the reject response and product tracking separately from the inspection decision. Sensing passage into a reject receptacle also needs to be associated with the intended bottle.

To locate the failure, connect three observations: the known defect, the inspection decision and the bottle’s destination. A reject command records intent; tracking and physical feedback show what followed.

What an acceptance decision covers

An acceptance decision concerns the inspection criteria actually evaluated. Evidence about a count defect does not establish the result for an unrelated defect. Retain the target condition and reference labels with the outcome instead of reporting “accepted” as a universal statement about the bottle.

Classification applies to a stated defect and inspection scope. Sensitivity and acceptance decisions depend on the actual system and its agreed requirements.
