HPMC capsule

A capsule whose shell uses hypromellose, also called hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a cellulose derivative.

Also called: hypromellose capsule; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose; vegetarian capsule.

Are hypromellose and HPMC different capsule materials?

They name the same polymer: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is commonly abbreviated HPMC and called hypromellose. The polymer name does not describe the complete shell formulation. Depending on the grade, a shell can also contain gelling-system ingredients such as carrageenan and potassium chloride.

When comparing offers, ask for the exact grade and its ingredient statement. “Vegetarian capsule” is a broader description than one named HPMC formulation. Neither a material nickname nor a plant-origin claim establishes that two offered shells have the same composition, dimensions or operating behavior.

HPMC grade and release behaviour

No. HPMC capsule grades can have different release designs, including immediate-release and acid-resistant applications. The material name alone does not establish release behaviour for a filled supplement. Use evidence for the actual shell grade and formulation.

The same caution applies to processing. Shells can differ in shape, pre-closing force and dimensional tolerances. A change from gelatin to HPMC needs assessment with the proposed shell and line; it is not a promise of identical settings or rejection rates.
