Factory acceptance test (FAT)

Testing at the supplier’s site before delivery to check the equipment or system against agreed requirements.

Also called: factory acceptance testing.

What a factory acceptance test demonstrates

A factory acceptance test evaluates the agreed equipment scope at the supplier before the later installed-site assessment. Its evidential value depends on what was actually tested. A dry functional run, a run with substitute material and a run with the intended product answer different questions; they should not share an unexplained pass statement.

Tie each requirement to its test record: document review, dimensional checks, functional runs and product runs demonstrate different aspects of the agreed scope. Record the product, format, conditions and measured outcome for each run.

Can a FAT be witnessed remotely?

Yes. Participants can witness a test remotely while the equipment remains at the supplier’s test facility. Remote describes the witnessing arrangement, not a change in physical test site. Camera views, visible instruments and accessible records determine what can be examined.

Agree how results are captured and which observations need another form of evidence. Retain the tested configuration, participants and disposition of deviations alongside the result. A video of an apparently smooth run alone cannot establish which requirements were covered or which items remain open.
