User requirements specification (URS)

A document describing what users and owners need an equipment system to do, providing a reference for design and verification.

Also called: user requirements specifications.

Is a URS the same as a supplier quotation?

A user requirements specification states what the intended user needs the equipment or system to do. It defines the required functions and performance before detailed design choices are evaluated. A supplier quotation and technical design describe a proposed way to meet those needs; they are not interchangeable with the user requirements.

For a capsule filler, name the intended products, formats and outcomes. “Suitable for capsules” leaves the actual equipment task undefined.

Turning a throughput need into a testable requirement

Describe the output unit and the conditions under which the result matters. A request for “high speed” leaves product, pack size, run duration and accepted-output criteria unresolved. A request framed around a named product/format and a defined measurement lets the parties agree how evidence will be collected.

For example, specify whether output means bottles per minute or tablets per minute, and whether rejected bottles are excluded. Connect each requirement to an agreed test and identify those that depend on the installed site.
