Tamping pin

A pin that compresses powder in a dosing-disc bore during tamping-style capsule filling.

Also called: tamping; tamping-style filling.

Why does a capsule filler use more than one tamping action?

Tamping-style filling forms a powder dose through successive filling and compression actions in a bore before transfer. The aim is a transferable slug, rather than simply pushing loose powder into a shell with one rod.

The dosing disc supplies the bore geometry; the pins act on the powder within it. The number and arrangement of tamping stations depend on the machine.

Are pin depth, compaction force and fill weight interchangeable?

No. Position describes displacement or penetration; force describes mechanical loading; fill mass describes material delivered. A position value alone is neither a force measurement nor a universal milligram setting.

Identify which force is reported. Transfer force measured while pushing out a plug or withdrawing a transfer pin concerns a later event than tamping compaction. Retain the station, direction and measured action with the force trace.
